Armor of God coloring pages β Ephesians 6, all 6 pieces
The Armor of God is one of the most-taught passages in Christian children's ministry and Catholic CCD. Paul's metaphor in Ephesians 6:10-18 β comparing the Christian life to a Roman soldier's full equipment β gives kids and adults a visual, memorable framework for understanding spiritual life as active engagement rather than passive belief.
This Armor of God section holds our complete catalog: each of the six armor pieces, plus the composite "full armor" page, plus the discussion questions and prayer prompts that complete a 6-week or one-day VBS unit on the passage.
Ephesians 6:10-18 β the full text
Paul writes:
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests."
This is the central passage for spiritual warfare teaching in Christian tradition. Six explicit armor pieces (belt, breastplate, footwear, shield, helmet, sword) plus the closing call to prayer.
The six pieces of armor
1. The Belt of Truth
In a Roman soldier's equipment, the belt held everything together β without the belt, the tunic flapped freely and the soldier couldn't move effectively. Paul's metaphor: truth is foundational to the Christian life. Living in lies destabilizes everything else.
Discussion for kids: "What does it mean to live in truth? Where might you be tempted to lie?"
2. The Breastplate of Righteousness
The breastplate protected the heart and vital organs. Paul's metaphor: righteousness β right living β protects the believer's heart from the spiritual attacks that follow from sin. Some traditions emphasize "imputed righteousness" (Christ's righteousness applied to the believer); others emphasize "imparted righteousness" (the believer's actual righteous living). Both are biblically defensible.
Discussion: "What does it mean to do what is right? Why does it protect us?"
3. The Shoes of Peace (Gospel Readiness)
A Roman soldier's caligae (military sandals) had hobnails that gave grip and stability. Paul's metaphor: readiness to share the gospel of peace gives the Christian stable footing. Some translations render this "the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace" or "feet fitted with the gospel of peace."
Discussion: "What does it mean to be ready to share the good news? Who could you share it with?"
4. The Shield of Faith
The Roman scutum shield was large enough to cover most of the body, made of wood and leather, often soaked in water to extinguish flaming arrows. Paul's metaphor: faith extinguishes the "flaming arrows of the evil one" β temptations, lies, accusations.
Discussion: "What 'flaming arrows' do you face? How does faith help?"
5. The Helmet of Salvation
The helmet protected the head β the seat of thought and decision. Paul's metaphor: the certainty of salvation protects the Christian's mind from spiritual confusion and despair.
Discussion: "How do you know you're saved? Why is that important to remember?"
6. The Sword of the Spirit
The Roman gladius was a short sword used in close combat. Paul's metaphor: God's Word β scripture β is the believer's offensive weapon in spiritual warfare. The only offensive piece in the armor list.
Discussion: "How can knowing the Bible help you in hard times? What's a verse that helps you?"
The 6-week Sunday school unit
A standard 6-week Armor of God curriculum:
- Week 1: Belt of Truth (Ephesians 6:14a)
- Week 2: Breastplate of Righteousness (Ephesians 6:14b)
- Week 3: Shoes of Peace (Ephesians 6:15)
- Week 4: Shield of Faith (Ephesians 6:16)
- Week 5: Helmet of Salvation (Ephesians 6:17a)
- Week 6: Sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6:17b)
Each week: read the verse, color the piece, discuss the application, pray. By the end of week 6, kids have all 6 pieces colored and assembled β often taped together as a paper-doll-style "full armor" composite.
The 1-week VBS unit
For VBS use, the Armor of God can compress into a 5-day theme:
- Day 1: Belt of Truth + Breastplate of Righteousness (paired)
- Day 2: Shoes of Peace
- Day 3: Shield of Faith
- Day 4: Helmet of Salvation
- Day 5: Sword of the Spirit + composite review
Our VBS Armor of God bundle supports this format with theme decorations, station templates, and volunteer guides.
Spiritual warfare framing β age-appropriate
The Armor of God passage engages with spiritual warfare and the reality of demonic opposition. Our age-tier policy:
Preschool
The armor pieces are taught as "things God gives us" without elaborating on the spiritual warfare context. The "flaming arrows" and "powers of darkness" content is deferred to older tiers.
Kids 5-10
The full passage is taught with appropriate framing. Kids learn that there are real spiritual forces of evil opposed to God's people, and that God equips believers to stand. The framing avoids creating fear; emphasis is on God's protection and equipping.
Teens and adults
Full theological engagement with spiritual warfare. Our adult companion notes draw on the historic Christian teaching on the powers and principalities, the believer's struggle, and the discipline of standing firm.
Catholic vs Protestant emphasis
Both traditions teach Ephesians 6 substantively, with different emphases:
- Catholic: spiritual warfare is integrated with sacramental life and the Rosary, the Saint Michael Prayer, and the Eucharist as central means of grace
- Protestant: spiritual warfare is more often understood as individual believer wielding scripture and prayer
Our pages serve both emphases.
