VBS coloring pages organized by theme — print-ready for the week

Vacation Bible School is the most concentrated week of children's ministry in the church calendar. Five days, multiple classes per day, dozens of kids, a single unifying theme that ties every activity together. Generic Sunday school pages don't fit — VBS needs theme-coherent visual content that works as wall decorations, take-home crafts, and activity stations all at once.

This VBS section is built for that reality. Every page comes from a teacher who's actually run VBS week, tested in the classroom, sized to be visible from the back of a fellowship hall, and printable in bulk without consuming an absurd amount of toner.

The VBS workflow we built around

After running VBS at our church for five years, here's the planning rhythm that worked:

8 weeks before VBS (theme selection)

The director picks one of the standard Christian VBS themes for the week:

• Armor of God — Ephesians 6 spiritual armor, "Stand Strong" or similar
• Fruits of the Spirit — Galatians 5:22-23, "Grow Together" theme
• Parables of Jesus — Sermon on the Mount + Good Samaritan + Prodigal Son
• Holy Spirit / Pentecost — Acts 2, "Spirit Power" or similar
• Bible Heroes — David, Moses, Esther, Daniel as faith figures
• The Lord's Prayer — line-by-line over 5 days
• Bible journeys — Paul's missionary journeys, the Exodus, Abraham's call

4 weeks before VBS (page printing)

Once the theme is set:

1. Identify the 5 sub-themes (one per day of VBS week).
2. Download the matching coloring page bundles from this site — typically 6 pages per sub-theme.
3. Estimate quantity: number of expected kids × 5 days × 6 pages per day. A 60-kid VBS week needs roughly 1,800 prints.
4. Print in batches at the church's office copier, 75-gsm paper. A modest church laser printer at 30 ppm handles this in ~60 minutes of unattended printing.
5. Sort into per-day per-class folders so volunteers can grab a stack of 20 and head to their station.

Week of VBS (run the program)

Each day's coloring activity follows a similar pattern:

• Opening assembly (15 min): all kids gather, theme music + skit + scripture
• Color station (15 min): kids at tables, themed coloring pages, age-appropriate
• Craft station (20 min): something more interactive (paper plate craft, friendship bracelet, etc.)
• Snack + recreation (20 min)
• Bible story station (15 min): formal teaching with our Bible character pages or parable pages
• Closing assembly (10 min): theme song reprise, blessing

The color station is intentional downtime — kids need a break from active games and structured teaching. Coloring fills it productively without exhausting their attention.

The 7 most popular VBS themes (and the pages that support them)

Based on the most-published VBS curricula from the major Christian publishers (Group, Cokesbury, LifeWay, Concordia, Catholic CCD), here are the seven themes that recur most often:

1. Armor of God — "Stand Strong"

The Armor of God series covers all six pieces from Ephesians 6:10-18 across five days:

• Day 1: Belt of truth
• Day 2: Breastplate of righteousness + shoes of peace
• Day 3: Shield of faith
• Day 4: Helmet of salvation
• Day 5: Sword of the Spirit

2. Fruits of the Spirit — "Grow Together"

The Fruits of the Spirit series covers the 9 fruits from Galatians 5 in a 5-day rotation (typically 2 fruits per day, with Friday as composite review).

3. Bible Heroes — "Faith Warriors"

A rotation through the major Old Testament heroes — Moses, David, Daniel, Esther, Joseph — one hero per day.

4. Parables of Jesus — "Stories with a Twist"

The parables of Jesus collection features the most-taught parables: the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, the Mustard Seed, the Lost Sheep, the Sower.

5. Sermon on the Mount — "Mountain Lessons"

Matthew 5–7 across five days: the Beatitudes (Monday), the Lord's Prayer (Tuesday), love your enemies (Wednesday), seeking first the kingdom (Thursday), the wise and foolish builders (Friday).

6. Bible Journeys — "Follow the Way"

The Exodus journey, Paul's missionary journeys, Abraham's call to Canaan — geography-focused content with maps and travel imagery.

7. The Holy Spirit — "Spirit Power"

Acts 1–2, Pentecost, the early church, the dove symbol, the Fruits of the Spirit. Often run as the post-Easter VBS in May or June.

What makes a VBS page different from regular Sunday school

VBS pages are designed with three considerations Sunday school pages don't always need:

1. Visible from across the room

VBS rooms are bigger than Sunday school classrooms. The coloring page needs to "read" from 20 feet away — large central figures, simple bold lines, minimal fine detail. Our VBS variants use thicker outlines than the equivalent Sunday school page.

2. Bulk-print friendly

A typical VBS week prints 1,500–3,000 coloring pages. Pages need to print fast (no large solid-fill regions that slow the printer), with minimal toner per page (no large dark areas), and clearly enough that even faint prints work.

3. Activity-paired

Many VBS pages are designed to pair with a craft activity. The shield of faith page pairs with making a paper shield. The Fruits of the Spirit tree page pairs with a real fruit tasting station. The Pentecost flame page pairs with red and orange tissue paper "flames" the kids can attach.

Editorial standards for VBS content

Our standard editorial policy applies, with three VBS-specific additions:

• Energy-appropriate. VBS kids are excited, loud, and short-attention. Pages can't require 20 minutes of focused coloring to feel complete — they need to read well even when colored quickly.
• Theme-coherent. Each VBS bundle within a theme uses the same visual vocabulary (same characters, same setting, same border style). Kids should recognize "this is from the Armor of God week" at a glance.
• Volunteer-friendly. VBS is staffed by volunteers, often non-teachers. The discussion questions and Bible verses on each page are written so a parent volunteer with no teaching experience can lead a 5-minute station.

Tips from teachers who've run VBS

Specific advice from teachers we've talked to who've used our pages in VBS programs:

• Pre-color a sample of each page as a visual aid for the teacher. Volunteers find it easier to lead the station if they have the finished version to show.
• Tape one of each page to the wall as the week progresses — by Friday, the room is decorated with the week's lesson visually.
• Save 5–10 of each page for the end-of-week celebration — distribute to parents as a memento of what their kids learned.
• Build the schedule around 5-minute station rotations — kids stay engaged longer with frequent transitions, so plan coloring as a 10–15-minute block with a 5-minute craft hands-on add-on.
